KIDS AND DANCE: A WORLD TO EXPLORE

Being a kid and taking part in a dance class, is one of the most important and exciting times of their lives. Creativity is sparked, and the imagination is roaming free. For that one day a week, they recognize that they can let their emotions and wild energy be channelled toward something positive and fun. Getting your child involved in dance young is highly crucial towards their growth into young adults, and here’s why.

The saying “listen and learn” has never been truer when it comes to dance class. Participating doesn’t just mean doing the moves; it refers to actively listening while in class, which leads to a better understanding of how to execute the moves properly. Learning this discipline will translate into the rest of their lives such as the classroom, and home life. When it comes to criticism, some may take it to heart especially if we never learned about how to handle constructive criticism at a young age. However, listening to criticism and learning how to apply it to oneself is essential at a young age.

With all this, follows self discipline; Learning how to improve their own behaviour is something everyone requires as they entire adulthood. When entering a class for the first time, it can be a bit overwhelming. Being young and not knowing anyone around you can feel scary. However, this is the time to break down those social barriers and build the confidence they need to become their future selves.

Team work is a huge part of being involves in any sport. Getting to know your peers on a personal level is something that will happen over time and is essential when learning how to build trust in one another. The aspect of socialization can assist in overcoming any fears about public performance as well. If you are comfortable with the people around you, and learn how to properly present yourself, being in front of an audience should be a breeze. This is something we all must face one day, so gaining that confidence when young is one of the most important things we will use for the rest of our lives.

Self-esteem is a complicated topic when growing up. Kids seem to have boundless confidence like superheroes, but as they get older, that can quickly fade. So how do we tackle this with a simple dance class? Dance can teach us many things, and one of them is to learn how to control our own body’s movement.

Confidence is a lengthy process but learning to appreciate the skin we were born with is a good place to begin. Self determination will also come with taking a dance class, as they will see how far they’ve advanced with weekly practice. When they see their skills evolving, that is pure motivation to keep going, and further sharpen their skills.

There are certainly physical benefits to dance as well. Dance is of course, a sport so the body will adapt to the movement, and the muscles will strengthen over time. Flexibility is something that dance teachers will enforce as well, as daily stretches will help with developing muscle. It is a well-known fact that children need to be physically active for at least 60 minutes a day to help them develop a strong heart, and dancing is no exception when it comes to cardiovascular health. Allowing them to be physically and mentally active while still having fun is something that dance does better than any other activity.

For years parents have enrolled their children in dance because they know the benefits, and the power it holds in the development of their children’s health. Creativity is vital to any child’s well-being, and the art of bringing music, physicality, and imagination together is one of the best things we can give to them.
